Pro Evolution Soccer 2014

Introduction:

Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 (officially abbreviated as PES 2014, known in Asia as World Soccer: Winning Eleven 2014 and World Soccer: Winning Eleven 2014 - Aoki Samurai no Chousen in Japan only) is a football video game developed and published by Konami for various platforms in 2013. Released on Microsoft Windows, Nintendo 3DS, PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, and Xbox 360, it marked a departure in cover art by not featuring a football player, a first since Pro Evolution Soccer 3 in 2003. Although a later version was released with football players on the cover, PES 2014 became the last game for the PlayStation 2 and PlayStation Portable in Europe, succeeded by Pro Evolution Soccer 2015.

Gameplay

Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 focused on six key elements to define the physics and features of the game, centering everything on the ball's movement and players' interaction with it. Factors such as ball physics, player stature, pass speed, and height were considered to recreate a realistic football experience on home systems.

The Motion Animation Stability System (M.A.S.S.) played a crucial role in enhancing the realism of physical contacts between players, tackles, and AI-driven decisions for more open games. The audience's influence on the team's performance was introduced, and individual player performances on the pitch had a direct impact on the team, providing a morale boost for exceptional moments or prompting teammates' support during challenging times.

Building on the Player ID system introduced in PES 2013, PES 2014 expanded the system to cover entire squads, replicating each team's playing style. The new Combination Plan allowed users to set up diverse tactics in key areas of the pitch using three or more players, encouraging different runs to exploit defensive or midfield gaps.

The UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, and UEFA Super Cup were fully licensed, and the game featured an exclusive license for the AFC Champions League, Argentine Primera División, Chilean Primera División, along with Arabic, Argentinean, and Chilean commentaries. The Master League now allowed players to change teams and coach a national side. Additionally, players could create 3rd and 4th kits, with some being official.

Development and Release

Pro Evolution Soccer 2014 was officially announced by Konami on March 10, 2013, and released on September 19 in Europe, September 20 in the United Kingdom, and November 14 in Japan. The PlayStation 2 version was exclusively released in Europe, marking the final game on the system in this region and the last retailed PlayStation Portable game in Europe and Mainland Asia.

Downloadable Content

In March 2014, a downloadable content pack added the World Challenge mode to PES 2014, introducing a tournament similar to the FIFA World Cup. This mode featured national teams competing for the trophy, providing official World Cup kits to licensed teams participating in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

Engine

PES 2014 utilized the Fox Engine, a cross-platform game engine developed by Kojima Productions, designed for the next generation of video games. The engine aimed to facilitate the development of multiplatform games with a shortened development time. It incorporated Havok for a comprehensive simulation of each on-field player's movements and reactions based on their mass and physique. The PlayStation 2 version, however, did not employ the Fox Engine.

World Soccer: Winning Eleven 2014 - Aoki Samurai no Chousen

A special version, World Soccer: Winning Eleven 2014 - Aoki Samurai no Chousen, was released exclusively in Japan on May 22, 2014. This edition introduced two new modes: Japan Challenge, where the Japan national football team competes to win the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, and the licensed J.League, available only in the PS3 and 3DS versions.
