A new mode named 'Become A Legend' mirrors EA Sports FIFA Series' 'Be a Pro' and was initially present in Japanese versions as Fantasista, later released as a special edition for J-League Winning Eleven 2007 Club Championship.

About This Game

For the first time, Konami secured the rights for the UEFA Champions League, with Manchester United and Liverpool being the only fully licensed Premier League clubs. However, the league itself remains integrated but unlicensed, akin to previous releases. Unlicensed clubs feature real player names but use fictional club names, badges, and kits, which can be user-edited. Additionally, a separate league with 18 generic teams allows full editing, excluding the PS2 version and featuring only two teams in the PSP edition.

The cover athletes for PES 2009 are Lionel Messi and Andrés Guardado. Messi's exclusive agreement includes featuring on all versions and promotional materials for the game.

Wii version

The Wii version, released in March 2009, builds on its predecessor's control system. PES 2009 on Wii offers enhanced shooting control, reworked defensive elements for better player control, an implemented AI system for intuitive teammate movement, and a cooperative play system for coordinated gameplay between different controllers. The Wii version introduces new game modes such as the Master League, enhanced Champions Road competition, improved Edit Mode, expanded online gameplay options, and a training mode for Mii characters.

A playable demo was released for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC on October 2, 2008. The demo featured teams like Manchester United, Liverpool, Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, Italy, or France, allowing players to engage in a full five-minute exhibition match with a multiplayer option.
